Merry Christmas. Happy New Year. We made it.
How are you doing?
I’m getting back to the basics around here until things return to normal and I can consider how to make the most of 2019. I’ve found that January 1st isn’t the best time for me to make that decision (or really anytime between Christmas – New Year’s Day).
If words of the year, resolutions, detox (from sugar, hosting, travel, late nights, etc), and how to return to normal life have your head spinning, here is my suggestion.
Tackle the task at hand. (I told you we're going back to the basics.)
This is what tackling the task at hand looks like around here…
In dire situations, I look around and take stock of what’s going on and the state of me and my family.
Then, I determine the thing I am supposed to be doing (change the diaper, unload the dishwasher, switch over the laundry, etc.).
Then, I do it before I have time to talk myself out of it and I move on to the next task at hand until I have a moment to be more proactive.
When I have a couple minutes to proactively tackle the task at hand, I jot down a QUICK and simple list in the order in which I should be doing different tasks, activities and chores throughout the day.
Then, I refer to the list and move from task to task.
My boys are with me during the day but I try to consider good times to read and interact with them intentionally so that they’re filled up and able to handle independent play or a snack while I take out the dishes (for example).
At this time of year, I am tempted to focus on making big, life changes. However, big changes are difficult for me to execute when the little things are out of control as we emerge from a busy holiday season.
This first week of January, I am keeping it simple. I am going to wake up in the morning and tackle the task at hand. Little by little things will return to normal – I’m counting on it. Tackling the task at hand hasn’t let me down yet.
As we return to normalcy (which still involves its own kind of chaos), I know we will be able to consider how to have the best year yet especially once we re-establish consistent, daily routine.
Happy New Year. I am so glad you are here!
