Do you ever end up in a funk but nothing in particular has gone wrong?
I had a day like that yesterday and I decided to vacuum the hardwood floors while the boys played happily together. Vacuuming totally pulled me out of the funk! This has happened before (I think it's due to the white noise + space to think + the simple joy of a clean floor).
I decided to write down a list of questions to ask myself the next time one of those mornings happen and I need to get out of a funk. In the past, I would throw my hands up and resign to having a bad day but it turns out that's a terrible way to go about life.
Maybe the list below is helpful for you but if not, I hope this encourages you to consider what is helpful for you when you find yourself in a funk.
Have I prayed yet today?
Can I take some time for prayer while the boys join me (or play) or turn on some praise and worship music?
Have I taken a shower or at least washed my face and brushed my teeth?
Am I dressed in something other than pajamas? Changing from pajamas into sweats or yoga pants totally counts.
Did I drink my coffee? If not, DRINK COFFEE. If yes, did I drink any water? Many problems can be solved by drinking more coffee and/or water.
Have I opened the blinds? Sunshine is good for the soul.
Have I unloaded the dishwasher?
Are things that are quickly fixable out of sorts? Can I straighten the pillows, fold throw blankets, load dirty dishes?
Are toys everywhere? Pause and clean-up quickly even if we'll do it later, too.
Does it smell weird? Light a candle or start the diffuser.
Do I need to take out the trash?
Would music help? Turn music on that the boys love (if it would help them) or turn music on that I love.
Is music playing and making everyone nuts? Turn it off.
Is everyone whining? Do I need to stop, look someone in the eye and engage them intentionally or read them a book?
Are the boys whiney and hungry? Am I whiney and hungry? Feed the people.
Can I do that go-to chore that always makes a difference? Right now, that's vacuuming the wood floors. I always feel better and the house looks and feels better - win/win.
What would you add to your list? Here's to funk-less days (unless you're listening to Uptown Funk to get yourself out of a funk). Regardless, I wish you lovely days ahead.
