A little over a year ago, I prayed, Lord, I want to do something great for you! His response was, be present where you are right now. I heard this so clearly in prayer, books I was reading and conversations with my husband and friends.
At the time, I wasn't pursuing greatness within my home or family life. I used the desire for greatness as a means to validate myself and escape my current reality. I felt like I was suffocating in the midst of the chaos of staying home full-time while raising three boys 3.5 and under. Honestly, I wanted to pursue something great to make me feel better about the sorry state of things within my home.
Maybe God would answer your prayer for greatness differently but in my own life, I felt him repeat, you want to do something great? Be great where I have you right now.
Once I leaned into that and quit fighting it, I experienced lasting peace for the first time as a mama. Order was established and I had a greater capacity to love and to be generous.
If it is of the Lord, you will experience peace (not necessarily ease)
Perhaps you have a desire to do something great and you've brought it before God. As you discern his answer, if it is of the Lord, you will experience peace. Sure, his answer may stretch you, but you will experience a lasting peace.
We literally named our second son Pax (peace in Latin - we pronounce it Pax like Jacks) to remind us that "the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7).
God's peace surpasses all understanding. Sometimes it doesn't make sense why we (or others) have peace at different moments in our lives, but if God has called us to something, we will experience a greater peace.
I know this is true because when I chose to be present where God had me, I began to experience peace in the midst of the chaos of raising three little boys. It honestly didn't make sense but I was grateful!
Pursue greatness, but not at the expense of peace.
Let's listen carefully to the Lord and ask him what he has for us. This isn't a meek request. Pursuing greatness while grounded in peace requires a tenacity I have only recently recognized. When we are called by the Lord to something, it's going to require our full effort.
Maybe the Lord's call to greatness in your life is to dig in deeply at home - to establish solid habits and routines around the house, to provide food and clean clothes for your family and love each member of your family.
I will say it here and now: that is a worthwhile pursuit.
I know God answered my prayer to do something great a little over a year ago because peace now reigns in my heart. I am convicted that being present where I am right now is a great gift for me and my family.
God has a unique call to greatness for each of us. I pray that we discern his voice and experience peace that surpasses all understanding.
